Kaitum chapel is built inspired by the shape of a Sami hut “Kåta” and designed by Jan Thurfjell at the initiative of Andreas Labba. It is located in Kaitum, about 60 km north of Gällivare. In 1964, the chapel was built to honor Dag Hammasköld. The chapel is constructed with timber and the roof that extends down to the ground is clad with wooden shingles. The “smoke opening” in the ceiling is clad with plexiglass and the inner walls with wood paneling. The porch window faces the west and the mountains. In the chapel, there is also a memorial sculpture representing Dag Hammarsköld.
