Boliden Aitik has decided to cancel all mining tours until further notice due to the Coronavirus
Aitik is Europe’s largest copper mine. Here the chalcopyrite is mined, it contains copper, gold and silver. Aitik uses some of the world’s largest machines. Among them are rock trucks weighing 570 tonnes with cargo, where only the wheel is four meters in diameter and excavators that hold up to 45 cubic meters of rock in the buckets. The machines are run by almost as many women as men, making Aitik one of the world’s most equal mines. There is also the world’s first electric trolley track in the Arctic climate that allows you to drive the rock trucks on electricity.
At the end of the 19th century, this land area was Sweden’s “Klondyke”. The new community Malmberget grew rapidly and soon it was realized that the community was on an unstable basis due to the ore mining. In 2004, a drastic and final decision was made; The whole of Malmberget must be moved! You get a tour of Malmberget, Koskullskulle, and Gällivare. We take a historical look and then go into the New Gällivare.
