In April 2017, Riksbyggen surprised the citizens of Kiruna with a unique art project – Solar Egg. The purpose of the project is to create space for conversation and showcase the role of Riksbygg as a long-term social developer in connection with the big city move in Kiruna. Since then, the sauna has been on a tour to Paris and Artipelag outside of Stockholm.
On behalf of Riksbyggen, artist duo Bigert & Bergström has created a sculptural symbol as for the thoughts of regeneration. This is because Kiruna will undergo a major change where the entire city will be moved due to the extraction of iron ore.
The Solar Egg is made of gold-colored stainless steel mirror plates, where it’s faceted shape breaks up the environment it reflects in a variety of different mirror images. At the center of the egg is the heart-shaped sauna unit made of iron and stone. The temperature in the egg is kept between 75°Celsius and 85°Celsius, and can hold up to eight people.
